The draws have been made and Zambian champions Zesco United will entertain South African giants in Kaiser Chiefs before they travel to South Africa the second leg. Potentially to be staged at Iconic FNB Stadium in Soweto.
Is a good draw?
From a footballing sense, it’s the kind of fixture any impartial soccer fan would pay to go and see! And Zesco United should be favourite to win this one and progress to the group stages of the CAF Confederation Cup. But football is decided on paper.
It’s a tricky encounter though, Kaizer Chiefs who have not done well in the recent times in CAF competition and they will be taking on a Zesco United team dropped to the Confederation Cup after they were knocked out of the Champions League by TP Mazembe.
Amakhosi returned to continental club football this season after finishing third in the Absa Premiership and having beaten Zimamoto of Zanzibar and Madagascar’s ASSM Elgeco Plus to reach the play-off round of the competition.
It will be a big test for Amakhosi, who have a new man at the helm in Ernst Middendorp.
Zesco United though should forget about the pre season and in comparison to the active league because if they go in that route, then Kaizer Chiefs are through to the group stages.
The Zambian champions have shown in the past that they have what it takes to go far in continental club competitions.
The consolation for the Soweto giants is that will get inspiration from Mamelodi Sundown and Supersport United who both recently ejected Zesco United from CAF competition.
The first leg will be played between 11th to 13th with the second leg coming on the 18th -20th January 2019.
